Ceridwen Jane Gray

A Child's Journey To the Light

About Ceridwen Jane Gray

As a result of growing up during the 50's and 'flower power' 60's, my interest is in looking beyond the obvious restrictions, boundaries, and conditioning that informs society and shapes the human being today.

Whilst recognising that artifice is a survival tool and also one of power, I try to see past that to the true nature of myself, others and my surroundings, to find a balance between the two – delving into chaos, coming back to order – then settling somewhere in a dynamic middle! In this way, the essence is perceived, the intrinsic nature of phenomena, felt.

I seek to express this perception through a style of painting I call Organic Expressionism where my work is about possibilities and evolves rather than is preconceived.  Pictures are built up through layers of marks or glazing in order to express the depth and complexity that is inherently life today.

I think I would describe my work as abstract /imaginative.

Particular influences are Kandinsky, Rauschenberg, Frankenthaler, German Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism Symbolism, Sutherland, Piper and Quantum Physics!

My greatest influence was my mother who was an accomplished oil painter and the smell of paint and turps was always there!

This was  hotly followed by Kandinsky, whose colours and mark-making thrilled me.

I work in mixed water media – acrylic inks and paint, oil pastel, pastel, collage and gesso.

My style is abstract/ imaginative/intuitive.

I also love mixed media drawing which is playing a bigger part since being elected a member of the Society Of Graphic Fine Art.

I have exhibited in Cape Town, London, Tunbridge Wells and Battle and have works in private collections in Portugal, United States, South Africa and UK.
